Contact your MP/Prime Minister about New Clause 14

Last week, the bid to ban 'conversion therapy' failed in the House of Commons. Lloyd Russell-Moyle's Bill, strongly opposed by MPs, faced criticism for potentially prosecuting parents who discourage their children from changing gender, a measure that could have also affected teachers and educational professionals.

However, there is now another threat that could have a chance of succeeding via the Criminal Justice Bill. An amendment tabled by Alicia Kearns MP, New Clause 14, could be debated within weeks and would include ‘attempts to suppress or negate a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity’. We would suggest writing to the Prime Minister or your own MP to oppose this amendment. And here are some tips!

-          Remember to use your own words- identical communications may be discarded.

-          Be polite, succinct and clear.

Dear [MP's Name/Prime Minister],

1. Introduction:

   a. Briefly introduce yourself as a Christian teacher/explain your interest in education.

   b. State your opposition to any form of violent, abusive, or coercive behaviour, including towards individuals identifying as gay or trans, which are thankfully already illegal.

  c. Express serious concerns regarding the proposed amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill, particularly regarding its potential impact on religious freedom, specifically for Christians working in education.

2. Concerns with the Amendment. You could mention:

   a. The vague and broad nature of the proposed amendment, potentially criminalising well-intentioned actions of religious leaders, parents, and teachers.

   b. Address the potential legal repercussions Christian teachers may face for providing guidance or support in line with their faith.

3. Inconsistencies with Government Guidance. You could:

   a. Point out the contradiction between the proposed amendment and the draft government guidance for gender-questioning children, which respects the free speech rights of teachers.

   b. Emphasise the definition of conversion practices in the amendment, which may conflict with the government's stance on teachers' use of preferred pronouns.

4. Call to Action:

   a. Urge your MP to oppose the proposed amendment if it reaches a vote.

   b. Highlight the infringement on religious liberty and free expression such laws could entail.

   c. Stress the importance of protecting private family life from unnecessary government intrusion.

   d. Mention the lack of evidence justifying the need for such a ban.

5. Conclusion:

   a. Thank your MP for considering your concerns.

   b. Encourage further dialogue on this important issue.
