Letter from Education Secretary Gillian Keegan

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan has urged schools in England for the second time to share sex education materials with parents, emphasising the right of parents to know what their children are being taught in the classroom. This comes after concerns about the appropriateness of some sex education content. Ms Keegan believes new legislation is not necessary, as existing law gives parents the right to access the materials. The Department for Education clarified that copyright and contract law already allows parents to see the materials, even if a contract says otherwise. Parents may be asked to respect copyright agreements. ACT welcomes the reassurance but questions the effectiveness of remedies for uncooperative schools.
