Lat Blaylock
Rating:

Having extensively used the first Picturing Jesus pack, I was delighted to receive this second pack to review as I know it will be well used. Once again, Lat Blaylock has chosen sixteen powerful images of Jesus from around the world. The same successful format used for the previous pack is developed here again. On the reverse of each A4 picture are helpful questions and study notes. Accompanying the pictures is a very useful teacher's guide. This outlines a number of teaching and learning approaches, many of which enable students to develop higher order thinking skills. To support these strategies are photocopiable worksheets which can be used with all the pictures. There are two assessment tasks, the one for KS3 makes use of literacy strategies and promotes assessment for learning. However, it would have been helpful to give an example for level 7 (KS3) and for level 5 (KS2) in the guidance for students.
The scope for using these images is extensive. Starter activities can easily be based around them. I recently used Picturing Jesus (Pack A) with a colleague to develop the use of dance in RE. My only reservation with this pack is that many of the schools I work with have interactive whiteboards and digital projectors. It would be very helpful if the images could be put on a CD ROM. I highly recommend this pack to teachers. In addition, the images could be used creatively in any church setting, e.g. for a display, in children's work, for meditation or as a focus in worship or prayer. As the author claims, this pack 'opens up the possibilities of inspiring and spiritual learning'.
