Ten Out of Ten

Margaret Redfearn and Barbara Dixon

Rating:

10/10 is a book designed for teachers in assemblies or the classroom, to help children understand the Ten Commandments. Each commandment is presented in the form of a story which can either be read to the children or acted out by puppets (puppet designs in the back of the book). Following each story there are some valuable questions about the story linking it to the Ten Commandments. There is also a photocopiable worksheet with puzzles and a quiz.

For example ‘First Commandment – I am the Lord your God…’ is a story about a school camp, looking at the stars, discussion about if you can see God. Questions: When Arnie (boy) said he felt small, what did he mean? What do you think God thinks of us? Where do you think God is? Worksheet include: listing things God created, unscrambling words, discussing where God lives.

To be used in a school assembly setting, the teacher would need to develop the questions to link them back to the Ten Commandments. The worksheets aren’t very inspiring for school children. I feel the book has more use within a Sunday school setting or even a holiday club; just a starting point. I don’t think it really tackles the issues of the Ten Commandments.
