Must Know Stories

Robert Harrison

Rating:

This is the last in the Must Know Bible stories series. I was hooked. Robert Harrison is a master storyteller. Would “Thought for the Day” broadcast them, or a national newspaper use them I wonder?  That is really the only way that they will meet their target audience. The stated aim of this collection is to address the ignorance of society by presenting what SU sees as the most important Bible stories (you could quibble over the choice). However SU publications are not sold in secular bookshops.  In these days of tightening curricula content, trying to get the stories to all schoolchildren will be difficult, unless someone like Robert Harrison can retell them in assemblies.

I really enjoyed the Christmas story, which put the events into context and stripped them of tinsel and myth. David and Goliath had a brilliant ending and Mrs. Noah was very realistic, making me laugh and laugh. I’d love to read these to children in Year 7 or 8. I’d love to read them to anyone who will listen.

The rubric at the beginning of the book explains the background to the collection; a pity that the other volumes didn’t. A biographical note on the author would have been useful.

If you ever do an assembly, use these stories, they are great! I’m not putting my copy in the school library! I’m keeping it to use it wherever I can.
