Whoops-a-Daisy Angel is a short nativity musical for lower KS1 children. There are six original songs (plus a reprise), which are well-written to suit the range of young voices. All the songs are performed on the accompanying CD. There are also two versions of the accompaniment track on the CD, one without the melody line and one with a prominent melody line (although strangely the set with the melody line are not referenced anywhere in the book or CD cover and only on the CD itself). This choice of backing tracks enables confident teachers and children to perform without the support of the melody whereas less confident performers can have the necessary support.
The songs have simple lyrics, which are fairly repetitive (one perhaps too repetitive for the listener) and could be performed by a group or by a solo singer. The script is short with only a few lines between each song and would not be overly challenging for young children to learn.
The nativity story is told through the character of Whoops-a-Daisy Angel who brings the message to the shepherds. The beginning of the story focuses on Whoops-a-Daisy rather than the traditional nativity, but most of the songs focus on the Christmas story with the exception of one about snowflakes. Overall, a good production for young children with a fairly traditional, if not strictly Biblical, interpretation of the Nativity.
