This addition to Lion’s popular series of BIG Books is a delight. It joins other stories in the series such as In the Beginning, Noah and the Ark, Baby Jesus and The Lost Sheep, and is characterised by a clear and simple retelling of the story and bright and colourful paper collage illustrations on every page.
The story retells the events of the first Easter – Palm Sunday, Jesus overturning the tables in the Temple, the Last Supper, Judas’ betrayal and the crucifixion, the women at the tomb and Jesus’ appearances following his resurrection. The difficult parts of the story for young children are handled with sensitivity, yet are not glossed over, with the over-riding message that Jesus came to make the world a better place. The final page of the story shows the risen Jesus talking to a group of children and telling them that now it is their turn to tell everyone about him and the things he has taught them, and that everyone can be friends with God.
The book finishes with a glossary of special words, a short prayer and, for the teacher or parent, some notes of ideas on how to extend the thinking and understanding of young children.
An excellent resource, and an ideal introduction to this all-important story, suitable for sharing with groups of children from nursery age to KS1, both at school and at church.
