Tackling Tough Questions

Russell Stannard, Lat Blaylock and David Poyser

Rating:

This DVD resource accompanied by a workbook is well presented, interesting, challenging and offers a wide variety of activities suitable in many different 14-19 classrooms.

It tackles the three big ‘WHY?’ questions, Why Evil? Why Suffering? Why Death? under several sub headings. Each subheading has a film clip comprising of several young people expressing a statement of their belief about the topic from a religious viewpoint and then Theo and Anthea (believer and non believer!) explaining their reasoning and questioning each other. All of these clips, using a variety of different aged young people, are thought provoking and Theo and Anthea present their ideas and opinions well with really good examples and illustrations to help them put across their points. The workbook contains teacher’s notes, including a summary of the relevant film clip and discussion points; and teaching and learning activities such as questions to consider and written and oral tasks as well as additional resources (and permission to photocopy!). Although some of the activities aren’t ‘new’ in themselves they are all carefully prepared and detailed to suit the topics under consideration and certainly will engage learners in interesting and passionate discussions about these tough questions. Many of the activities are very suitable for use with 16-19 learners and the smaller groups and more confident learners one generally finds at this age make these exciting discussion facilitators and the teacher will certainly want to join in too! An excellent resource, all you need for a whole series of lessons!
