This booklet has a more Christian emphasis than its sister booklet “Codes for Living” with stories from other religions towards the end of the book.
For the four to six year olds there are suggestions as to how to plan a visit to the local church. The idea is to see it from the eyes of “teddy” with a power point presentation built up from photos taken before starting the lessons and visit. During the visit, “thought” questions can be collated and made into wall displays or a class book afterwards. Power point may not be every teacher’s forte but the ideas behind this are certainly worth considering.
For five to seven year olds the question “What does it mean to belong to a Christian family at Christmas?” is used as the base for various suggested activities and photocopiable workcards.
The seven to eleven year old section explores " Religion around Us” as a visual learning activity and there are children’s stories from RC, Quakers, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, Sikhs and Baha’is. The stories are told in the form of questions a reporter might ask like “What’s the best thing about being a Sikh? What is the most special day? What is your favourite story?” On the opposite pages are suggested activities, information file, level descriptions and a further information address.
There is a wealth of information in the 32 pages and enough for half a term’s work on the relevant strand of the RE syllabus.
